Some Real Facts About Donald Trump’s Surge In Followers

Over the last 24 hours we’ve received a bunch of inquiries from journalists regarding Donald Trump’s surge of twitter followers on the account, @realdonaldtrump. Along this subject, there has been some easily disprovable information going viral. Considering that SocialRank focuses on granular audience data, we thought we might put together a quick post that shows some real facts about Donald Trump’s followers.

The viral posts above by @txmockingjay and @th3j35t3r appear to be the start of the misinformation. The claim that Trump’s follower base increased by 5M is easily disproved by the greatest tool ever created, the Wayback Machine. Using the site, users can see that @realDonaldTrump had 30.6M followers on May 26th (3 days before the post). Nonetheless, @th3j35t3r and @txmockingjay’s tweets aren’t completely wrong as there has been an odd surge of fake/bot accounts following @realDonaldTrump’s account in the past month.

This newsworthy data was highlighted in early February; Mashable’s Kerry Flynn wrote an article using SocialRank data that showed that out of the 24.1M followers @realDonaldTrump had, 5M of them were egg accounts (i.e. no profile photo). Now, as of May 22nd (the last time @realDonaldTrump data fully ran in the system), he has just under 31M followers and 9.1M of them are eggs. This means that out of the 7M new followers, over 4M of them are eggs. Whereas in February his egg accounts made up 20% of his followers, they now make up almost 33% of his followers. Needless to say, this is a very big change in a short time.

Perhaps even more shocking is that in May alone, 927k egg accounts followed @realdonaldtrump. Out of this number, 711k (77%) have never posted. Additionally, each egg account has an average of only 1.6 followers. This begs the question – why are there so many meaningless followers?

We think that the rise of these accounts is explained by two things:

1) Someone is buying followers for @realDonaldTrump’s account.

2) Being added to the “who to follow” list really juiced the number of egg accounts following him.

Here is some other interesting data that we found on the 9.1M egg followers:

55.8% (5,077,800) never tweeted
17.2% (1,565,200) recently tweeted (i.e. in last 90 days)
27% (2,457,000) haven’t recently tweeted (tweeted but not in the last 90 days)
95.74% of the egg followers have under 25 followers
Top 10 most popular hashtags in posts by the 9.1M egg followers:
- #maga, #trump, #myfirsttweet, #giveaway, #makeamericagreatagain, #periscope, #fakenews, #trumptrain, #tcot, #debate
Top 5 most popular words in posts by the 9.1M egg followers
- realdonaldtrump, trump, president, news, live
46.4% (4,226,609) of the 9.1M have between 0 and 1 followers
7.9K of egg followers have trump in their bio
49.8K of egg followers tweeted #maga
1.9 million of eggs have tweeted since he became president
8 of these egg accounts are verified
927k of his egg followers registered and followed him in May

Tuesday 8-10pm is the most popular time for the eggs to post
On 5/24 59,358 of Trump’s egg accounts registered (largest single day)

Sharing Folders With Teams

Folders is a new feature we pushed two weeks ago. This lets you organize your reports and see them in a multi-report view. Now you can share these folders with your teammates so they don’t have to recreate them.

Export To PDF Update

A year ago we released the ability to look at your account in a “Summary” view. This gave you a snapshot of all your followers or a search query or list you’ve made. This “macro” data of your followers includes sections about Follower Activity, Follower Distribution, Top Follower Locations, Popular bio words, Gender, Popular time of posting, Popular words in posts, and Popular hashtags in posts and more. You could also export this information as a PDF.

We’ve just pushed a new update to the Export to PDF option to make it more similar to Export to CSV. You can now choose what you want to take out as well as add a custom header and note to the PDF. This is great if you are doing reporting and only care about certain metrics/charts to share.

For your PDF, you can choose to include: Activity Breakdown, Number of Followers Breakdown, Gender Breakdown, Popular Locations Map, Locations Map by Countries (defaults to grouping by State), Best Time to Post chart, Post Media Type chart, Popular Bio Words, Popular Post Word, Include Popular Hashtags, Include Popular Cashtags, and Include Popular Emojis.

New Filter: Profanity

At SocialRank we are always looking for ways to make it easier to find the right people that you are looking for in your audience. We have built out filtering options ranging from Bio keyword, Location, # of Followers, and more that will allow you to easily segment your audience.

We just released a new filter called Profanity that allows you to segment your followers by Uses Profanity and Doesn’t Use Profanity. This can be very useful when looking for followers that are safe for your brand or are more edgy.

Building Folders on SocialRank

We just pushed a new feature on SocialRank called Folders. This feature has two distinct use cases. The first is organization; it lets you group the accounts you run on SocialRank. The second is a multi-report view; allowing you to see the unique followers in a grouping of accounts. These both have a major impact on SocialRank’s usability and usefulness.

To build a folder you go into the top middle search bar and click the drop down. Once the drop down is visible, if you hover over any account, a little folder will pop up and allow you to either add a report to an existing folder or create a new one.

When you are in a folder there are three main options:
1) Refresh all the accounts
2) Delete the folder
3) View the combined report.

When you refresh all the accounts this triggers a one-click mass refresh. All the accounts begin to refresh at once. Deleting the folder is self-explanatory. And viewing the combined report let’s you see all the unique followers of the accounts in one report view.

When you do view the combined report it removes all the duplicates (i.e. if one account follows multiple accounts in the folder, they show up only once.) This can be very useful in understanding industry interests, demographic, geographic and audience size on social.

State vs. Country Account Summary View

One of the most popular features on SocialRank is the Account Summary view. This lets you see the macro data to get a better understanding of your audience. One of the data points included in the Account Summary is called Top Follower Location that shows where your followers are located.

Until now, we have shown just the State view (i.e. New York, London, Rio, etc). But with this update you can see both State view as well as toggle to Country view. This also includes the ability to see the percentage of “Other” (i.e. not one of the top locations).

This is just another way to segment audiences and help get some useful insight into them.

The options are English, French, Arabic, Japanese, Spanish, German, Italian, Indonesian, Portuguese, Korean, Turkish, Russian, Dutch, Filipino, Malay, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Hindi, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Polish, Hungarian, Persian, Hebrew, Thai, Ukrainian, Czech, Romanian, Vietnamese, and Bengali. This can be very useful when looking for followers that use a certain language in your network.

We just released a new filter called Device / Source that allows you to segment accounts on Twitter based on where the content of their tweets come from. The options are iOS, Android, Instagram, Facebook, TweetDeck, Hootsuite, BlackBerry, Windows, Samsung Mobile, LinkedIn, Spotify, Tumblr, and Foursquare. This can be very useful when looking for followers that use a certain device or network.

“Save and Export” is Now “Actions”

We recently changed the Save and Export button into the Action button. Over the past year we’ve added a number of “actions” you can take with your audience once you find the right person or people, and so the label of “Save and Export” didn’t make much sense anymore.

In Actions you can find the older staples like Exporting to CSV and Saving Search Queries. We’ve add things like Exporting to PDF, Creating Lists, and DM Campaigns. We have new things in the work, like Find Similar Profiles and Exporting to Twitter Lists.

Your SocialRank Personal Profile Card

We recently pushed the ability to see your own profile card as the first result in your SocialRank report. Till now, SocialRank focused on just your followers / audience / community, but now we’ve added the ability to see how you look in the system.

The profile card is comprised of basic information like Name, Handle, Number of Followers, Following, Tweets/Posts, Bio, Location, URL in bio, Average retweets (for Twitter) or comments (for Instagram) per tweet or post, Average Likes per tweet or post, Profanity level, Age of Account (if Twitter), Most Popular Posts (if Instagram) and Most Used Words, Hashtags and Emojis (with # count).

This provides an insightful snapshot of your account. We are looking to build out this feature with more useful information, so feel free to send us suggestions of things to add.
