New Feature: Keyword Exclusion

Recently we released an update for the ‘Bio Keyword,’ and ‘Words, Hashtags, & Emojis’ filters on SocialRank. You are now able to do an exclusionary search using both of these filters.

What this means is that when you enter a keyword you can select an option that will exclude results that have said keyword. In order to do this simply select “Search for none of these words” under the “Show search options” tab.

Consider this example- you’re Equinox and are rewarding your most engaged NY followers with a discounted membership. A lot of your employees are following you, so you want an easy way to remove them from the results view without having to customize a list manually. In order to do this, you’d add the filter for New York, and then in ‘Bio Keyword’ search “Equinox Trainer” and select the option to exclude these users.

New Sorting Option – Sorting By Term Frequency

Using SocialRank you’re able to sort your followers in a number of different ways. Sorting enables you to rearrange followers in a way that actually makes sense and isn’t arbitrary.

We’ve released a new sorting option – ‘Term Frequency’ which is tied to the ‘Words, Hashtags, & Emojis’ filter. When searching through followers using this filter, we had a number of requests asking to see who used the searched term the most. With this sorting option, you’re able to do just that.

For example I’m running an event that has a specific hashtag -let’s say #NYFW- and I want to find people that are interested in the event. I’d want to see who’s posting about it the most – and now I can do that using the ‘Term Frequency’ sorting.

It’s pretty simple to do – first run the search using the ‘Words, Hashtags, & Emojis’ filter, and then select the ‘Term Frequency’ option under sorting. On the individual profile card, you’ll see exactly how many times the person has posted.

New and Lost Followers

Recently we released an update for the Comparison Filter that allows you to compare lists on SocialRank. The ability to compare lists has quickly become a favorite amongst our clients with many different use cases.  

We wanted to share a step by step guide for a hack that we thought to be very useful. Whether you’re a company looking to measure success of a campaign or an individual trying to track your new and lost followers, you can use the Comparison Filter (in conjunction with building Lists) to do so.

Step 1: Create a list.

If you’re looking at new and lost followers on your account as a whole, you’d simply add all the followers to the list, but if you’d like to take a look a specific segment ie – followers in a certain location, use the the filters to curate your list.

I.e. – @Nike Followers in NY July

Step 2: Refresh your SocialRank account.

Every time you create a new list to compare against, it’s important to refresh the account first so the new followers / lost followers can be updated. Make sure the account has finished refreshing before comparing.

Step 3: Create the ‘new’ list.

I.e – @Nike Followers in NY August

Step 4: Compare both lists using ‘Compare Accounts and Lists’ filter.

Under lists, select the first list which will drop you into that list view. Using the ‘Compare Accounts and Lists’ filter select the new list.

I.e- To see new followers select the option “On @Nike Followers in NY August list & not on @Nike Followers in NY July list”

To see lost followers select the option “On @Nike Followers in NY July list & not on @Nike Followers in NY August list”

It’s useful to be able track the quality of new followers, and enables you to get a better understanding of how successful a campaign has been.

SocialRank Webinar – September 15th 2016

When we talk about how to use SocialRank, we always approach it as if it were a blank canvas. There’s already so many different use cases, and everyday we learn something new. It’s important to us that our clients get the most out of the platform, and for us to constantly innovate, and make the product better.

Comparison Filter Update: Comparing Lists

“Compare Accounts” is one of SocialRank’s most popular filters. When we first released a comparison filter it enabled you to compare any two accounts on Twitter or Instagram to each other and see the overlap or difference of followers. Later we released a version that allowed you to compare as many accounts as you’d like.

With the feedback from our clients we saw value in being able to compare different lists and so the new version of the filter lets you do just that. With the ‘Compare Accounts & Lists’ filter you can now compare multiple accounts and lists.

Imagine you’re Gap and you operate a number of brands such as Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Athleta. Each brand has it’s own individual following. You can use the ‘Compare Accounts & Lists’ to identify your audience that overlaps, or even use it to reach new audiences. Let’s say you wanted to run a campaign for your most engaged or most valuable followers across all your brands, you can curate individual lists and then compare them to find the overlap.

Another example would be tracking growth or changes during a campaign. Let’s say you’re launching a partnership with an influencer and are tracking followers you have in common. You can create a list that shows this overlap prior to the campaign, and then compare against future lists. You can save updated versions of the list daily or weekly and be able to see the change. This can help you determine how successful a campaign has been.

To compare two lists, select one list from the Lists tab. This drops you into that individual list view, and then using the ‘Compare Accounts & Lists’ filter select the list(s) you want to compare. You can then choose to see the overlap or difference of followers. The same concept applies to comparing to other accounts or multiple lists.

Deep Dive Into New Features: DM Campaigns

Back when we launched SocialRank Premium, we also introduced the DM Campaign feature. DM Campaign is only available for our Premium and Market Intel clients. You can upgrade to Premium or reach out about Market Intel here.

DM Campaigns enable you to scale one on one interactions with your followers on Twitter. You can send personalized messages to a group of individuals all at once rather than having to do the tedious process of copy and paste.

Brands love DM Campaigns and find it to be useful for inviting followers to special events, giving them products before they come out, surprise and delight campaigns, and other campaigns that provide value. We don’t recommend using DM Campaign for things that don’t provide value for your followers. For example, sharing content (that could otherwise be tweeted,) asking for retweets, etc.

Imagine you’re Nike, you have a new concept store launching in Los Angeles and you want to invite 200 of your most engaged followers in LA to shop before the grand opening. You would use SocialRank to build a list of these most engaged followers, and then go a step further by taking action on the list you’ve built through DM Campaign.   

You can find the ‘DMs’ tab on the top navigation bar. Choose a name for your campaign, select recipients using a list you’ve built or by entering the individual handles and lastly, enter your message. You can also attach a media file to your DM.

You can add tags (like a mail merge) to personalize the DM Campaign to the individual accounts (i.e. “Hey {firstName}” as opposed to something generic.) This lets you add a personal touch to your DM campaign and scale in a meaningful way. If you enter a tag incorrectly it will be highlighted in red – you can copy and paste from the ‘Available tags’ section just to be safe.

Currently, we’ve capped it at 10 recipients, but if you need an increase simply click ‘(request recipients increase),’ let us know how many, and a brief description of the campaign.

Once you’ve sent your DM Campaign, click the DM tab. The Message Center provides an overview of all your campaigns. To see details of each campaign click  ‘View Campaign.’ You can see the status of each individual DM (Pending, Finished, or Failed.) You can also pause the campaign while it’s running; this is useful when you’ve spotted an error on a campaign being sent to a large group. (DM’s go out about 1 per second.)

We’re already thinking of features to add so you can get the most out of DM Campaigns on SocialRank. We think it would be very beneficial to be able to measure a campaign, track response rates, and pull in the responses.

Emoji Search On SocialRank

Back in March we released the Word + Hashtag filter for Twitter and it was so popular that later in June we released the feature for Instagram as well. We’re always updating features to make sure you get the most out of SocialRank – and so by popular demand we’ve added the Emoji Search for both Twitter and Instagram!

The Emoji Search filter lets you to find followers who have included specific emojis in their bio, tweets or posts.

This can be very useful considering that emojis are often used interchangeably with words. For example, when a beauty blogger lists products they’ve used, they’ll almost always use the lipstick emoji before the name of the product. Now if I’m L’oreal and have a new lipstick line launching, this is insightful data that will help me find the right people to give samples to.

Account Summary: In Depth Review

SocialRank is useful for getting very granular data, but what if you wanted to see a snapshot of all your followers or a search query you’ve made?

We released a new feature called “Summary,” in May, that let’s you do just that. Now you can see the macro data of your followers as well. Data points include: Follower Activity, Follower Distribution, Top Follower Locations, Popular bio words, Popular words in posts, and Popular hashtags in posts.

  • Follower Activity is the activity breakdown for your audience. This data is useful to see how active your audience is.

  • Follower Distribution is distribution of how many followers your audience has. This data is useful to gauge the quality of your audience.

  • Top Follower Locations is a breakdown of locations where your followers have self-identified or geo-tagged in.
  • Screen Shot 2016-07-22 at 11.14.13 AMPopular bio words, Popular words in posts, Popular hashtags in posts, are exactly what they sound like. It’s very useful for you to be able to see what your followers are talking about, and what’s important to them.

This data will update as you enter different search queries.  For example, if you enter a bio keyword filter for ‘dog lovers’ which results in let’s say 100 followers, the summary tab data will be reflective of those 100 followers.

You can also export the Summary as a PDF – it’s great to have for meetings.

Most Frequent Location

In the past we’ve added updates to the Location filter in order to provide more context around why accounts show up in a result. Today we are pushing an additional update that will show the location an account posts most frequently from.  

On Twitter when you search in Location for San Francisco not only will you see the context for self identification, and geo-tag of tweets in San Francisco, but additionally you will see context for where that person posted the most from.

The most frequent location is useful because if someone doesn’t specifically self-identify on Twitter, you can get some context around where they’re most likely based. This will further help you in finding the right people for location based events or rewards.

On Instagram, we’ve found that the location most posted from can either be where the user is based or a vacation spot.
