Introducing SocialRank Premium

Today is a big day at SocialRank.

We’re excited to announce a new product called SocialRank Premium.

SocialRank Premium helps brands and agencies take action with their audience. For the past two years SocialRank has helped brands identify and segment their audiences. Now we help them take that pivotal next step, action, inside of SocialRank.

We’ve found that brands and agencies want to do more with their audience but don’t have the tools to figure out who they should work with. On top of that they don’t have software to manage it (all currently done on spreadsheets). So we, basically, built software to not only find and identify the right people in your audience (what SocialRank has been till now) but also to do things with them once they’re found.

Let’s jump into the new features:

Account Summary (Available on Twitter and Instagram)

A few months back we removed something we had called the SocialRank Dashboard. We didn’t love it and knew we could do better. We are bringing back many of its components in a new feature called Account Summary. In your account you can click a blue “Show Summary” button and see macro data on your audience. We have data, such as, Total Followers, Verified Followers, Follower Activity, Follower Distribution, Top Follower Location, Popular bio words, Popular words in posts, Popular hashtags in posts, and then Most Valuable, Most Engaged, and Best Followers.

The neat piece to Account Summary is the ability to make queries and have the data change. For example, if I want the account summary of only my followers that have the word “Engineer” in their bio, I can rework the Account Summary for that query.

This feature lets you take out Account Summary in a PDF. This is perfect for sharing with your team or printing out and bringing to a meeting.

DM Campaign (Available on Twitter only)

This is our favorite new feature. DM Campaign gives you the ability to DM a group of people, individually, at the same time. This can be very useful when looking to invite multiple people to a special event, seeding a product to select group of followers, and more.

You can find the DM campaign button in the top navigation bar. Once in, you choose a name for your campaign, select recipients using a list or by entering the handles and enter your message.

We have the ability to add tags (like a mail merge) to personalize the DM Campaign to the individual accounts (i.e. “Hey {firstName} as opposed to something generic). This lets you scale your one to one relationships in a meaningful way.

We have been releasing improved filters (new and existing), as well as making other feature advances for the past few months and they are a big part of the release today.

SocialRank Premium costs $49/mo and is a self-serve subscription service.

As of today, there are three pieces to SocialRank:

SocialRank Basic (or just SocialRank) is a free service that lets you log in with your Twitter or Instagram account, pull in all of your followers, and slice and dice them by Sorting and Filtering options. All sorting and filtering options are available to use as much as you’d like. Account Summary also comes with SocialRank Basic.

SocialRank Premium is a paid subscription ($49/mo) that lets you take action with your followers. The ability to Export to CSV, Save to SocialRank, Direct Message, Follow, Build Lists, Export to PDF, DM Campaigns, and more.

SocialRank Market Intelligence is the third piece. Market Intel lets you run any account on Twitter or Instagram as if it is your own. For this product you need to reach out to us for pricing as we work to tailor it for your organization. For this product you also get SocialRank Teams, a unique URL and environment to collaborate as a team.

When we released SocialRank Teams, we wrote about the future of SocialRank.

We’ve been mostly quiet the past 6 months building some awesome new things. We’ve really hit our stride here at SocialRank, growing every single month by over 30%.

The release today helps organizations unlock and extract all this untapped value from their audience to get the most out of social.

We’re excited to announce a new product called SocialRank for Teams.

SocialRank for Teams allows brands, agencies, and organizations to use SocialRank and Market Intelligence in a collaborative environment. With SocialRank for Teams you can set up email address logins for all team members, set permissions for individual members, and do this from a dedicated domain (i.e.,, etc.)

Once you’ve setup your domain, it is time to add departments or teams. Think of it as Channels on Slack. If you are someone like Adidas – you might want to have departments like @Adidas, @AdidasBasketball, @AdidasFootball, @AdidasBaseball, etc. On top of that you might want to have Social Media, Marketing, Human Resources, Analytics, Communications, Executive Team, and more.

A big piece of SocialRank for Teams is the ability to use Market Intel (the ability to run any public Twitter or Instagram through the SocialRank platform as your own) with your team. Market Intel has just come out of beta (you can request a demo here) and it keeps getting better. We’ve added new filters like the popular “Compare to another account filter” as well as new beta features that you will all get access to soon (they range from a Word/Hashtag Filter, Gender Filter, and more). Where We Go From Here


Over the past ten years brands, agencies, and organizations have spent countless hours and billions of dollars building massive audiences on social media. But when talking with them it is clear they don’t really know much about the people who follow them, and they aren’t doing anything with them besides broadcasting (tweeting, sharing, posting, pinning).

We believe the reason they don’t do more with their audience is they don’t have the tools to track and manage the campaigns they are running. A surprise and delight campaign here, a local event there. All of these are lost in endless spreadsheets on Excel or Google.

This is one of the reasons we built SocialRank. We want to help brands, agencies and organizations better identify, segment, and interact with their audience. But this is just the beginning.

This launch is a pivotal moment for SocialRank. We are putting down the foundation layer for what is to come. We are evolving from a social media analytics product to a collaborative audience management platform and CRM. We have new filters and sorting options coming out soon. SocialRank Engage

We are working on a new product at SocialRank called SocialRank Engage. We’re putting out a landing page (here) for those that want an early demo and walkthrough of the product.

SocialRank Engage is an evolution of influencer marketing.

The way we like to think about it is – regular SocialRank and Market Intel are both software as a service. Brands can do whatever they want with the data they find using – but it is manual work. Market Intelligence Comes Out Of Beta

After a year in private beta, SocialRank Market Intelligence is ready for its public launch.

Market Intel is everything SocialRank already does, organizing your Twitter followers and giving you control of sorting and filtering them by location, interests, engagement, and influence.

Except now you can do that with any public Twitter account you want. Want to see Coca-Cola’s, eBay’s, or your competitor’s followers? That’s what Market Intel lets you do.

In this post, we’re going to roll up our sleeves and dig into Market Intel — what it is, how to use it, and why we think it’s going to change the way brands think about “social media strategy.

SocialRank Market Intelligence for Twitter

Market Intel is very simple. Enter the handle you want to take over and, voila, it starts running. This handle could be one with over 10 million followers, or it could be your reclusive neighbor’s dog’s Twitter account. As long as the account is public and has more than 5 followers, it will run.

Once the account processes, you’ll have full access to followers of their account. You can do all the filtering, sorting, saving, and exporting you want.

Here are all of @Pepsi’s 2.8M followers, organized by Most Followed. For some strange reason, I’m really interested in finding only the followers who are based in New York, are verified accounts, and have the name Jimmy.

It turns out that the only verified Jimmy in New York that follows @Pepsi is none other than Jimmy Fallon. This search took me less than five seconds.

Obviously this is a silly application of our filtering and sorting, but it shows the insane granularity of the Market Intel product.

For more practical applications, imagine you are desperately in need of hiring a senior Python developer. In Market Intel, you could run accounts for the numerous tech companies (see example of @Github above) or blogs that an experienced developer might be following. A few minutes of sorting and filtering later, you now have a robust list of self-identified Python developers that you can reach out to or tailor your advertising to.

Alternatively, let’s say you’re a marketer at a major sports brand that’s launching a new flight of shoes. You might follow a similar line of logic and target ads at Knicks fans who like shoes.

This level of granularity lets you know exactly whom you’re ads are being targeted at, and why. Which frees up your creative team to actually, you know, create.

One of the new features we are releasing with the launch of Market Intel is the Account Comparison filter.

We saw a lot of beta testers exporting followers of multiple handles, hopping into Excel, and performing annoying VLookUp functions to compare the overlap and difference of accounts.

With the comparison filter, all of this is taken care of for you in-platform. We’ve visualized it for you because Venn diagrams are great.

The green overlap region selects followers that two handles share in common with each other. You can then filter through these followers even more specifically using the other various filters (Bio Keyword, Location, etc).

Of course, with a simple click on the corresponding circle, you can also select followers who either 1) follow another account but don’t follow you, or 2) follow you but not that other account.’

Use Cases

The possible use cases for Market Intel are wide and varied. We try our best to stay out of your way, so the platform remains very open-ended to allow for creativity.

Here are two ways we’ve seen Market Intel used:

1) Promoted Tweet campaigns with highly tailored audiences

In the beginning of 2014, Twitter released some updates to Paid Products. Now you can run an advertising campaign targeted to a specified list of email addresses and Twitter handles.

The catch is that if you want to do it well, you need to provide Twitter with those emails or handles. To compile these handles, as we mentioned earlier, some brands have been exporting followers on Twitter, running time-consuming Excel functions to clean up the list, and then feeding it back into Twitter’s Ads platform.

Our Account Comparison filter takes care of the Excel jiu jitsu in mere seconds. Now all you need to do is export the list back into your campaign.

We’re so confident that when done right Market Intel makes campaigns perform better that we are currently using it to promote the product’s public launch. We’ll report back on its performance in a future article.

2) Detailed demographic and psychographic research for agencies

What we’ve seen countless times are agencies using Market Intel in preparation to pitch a new potential client.

For example, one agency was pitching a well-known female-focused athletic brand. They decided to use Market Intel to run some research on the brand and the competitive landscape it occupies.

The agency weaved this data into their presentation, showing their deep knowledge of the brand. The presentation left a strong impression on the brand; the agency ultimately won the brand’s business.

While we are only releasing Market Intel for Twitter today, we are happy to also announce that Market Intel will be ready for Instagram very soon.

We are letting people begin requesting access as of today here. Beta access will begin very soon.

Where the Puck’s Headed (and Other Cliches)

We spend a lot of time speaking with marketers at big brands and agencies. Market Intel is the brainchild of all of these conversations we’ve had.

Digital marketing and social media teams (at both brands and agencies) are exasperated. They’ve been optimizing their content for sharing, posting it at all the right times, and building aggressive editorial schedules.

Yet at our meetings, we see stress and concern that this isn’t enough. The weekly metrics on engagement and conversion rates from click to buy don’t add up to the effort they’ve been putting in.

We’ve had an inkling that maybe this is because not enough time has been spent thinking about the who.

Who exactly are you trying to resonate with? Who’s already listening to you? Who’s already sharing your stuff with their audience?

Once brands can more accurately focus on the who, they can more excitedly work on the what- the part of their day that got them pumped up in the first place about their line of work. Market Intel speeds up this process and makes it more effective.

Darren Herman, VP at Mozilla, wrote a piece several months back that echoed a similar sentiment. As technology makes marketing spend more targeted and more effective, Herman wrote, the creative part of this business will flourish:

Introducing SocialRank for Instagram

At SocialRank we’re always thinking about where our industry is headed and what role we play in that future. Three things constantly turn up when we talk about the trajectory of social media and marketing:

First: there’s not one, but multiple social networks now with 100mm+ users — Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, and the rest of the gang.

Second: hundreds of millions of people are using these social platforms as integral parts of their daily lives.

Third: despite painstakingly building audiences on these social networks, brands don’t spend enough time understanding who exactly their existing followers are.

This blind spot is what we’re trying to address. We believe that over the next few years it’s going to become as important to understand who your existing followers are before running off to gain new ones. Our goal is to build a central location for anyone to be able to manage all of their followers across multiple social networks. We’re working to put the “people” piece of the puzzle back into the marketing stack.

Over the past year, these thoughts has guided many of our product decisions. Up until now we’ve focused solely on our Twitter product. Today, however, that changes with the launch of SocialRank for Instagram.

SocialRank for Instagram will have a lot of the same segmentation features as our Twitter product. You will be able to log in for free, load up your Instagram account, and quickly filter and sort through your Instagram followers based on engagement, bio keywords, location, and a few new ones like filtering by followers that use certain hashtags.

When your Instagram report loads after you log in, you will be directed to your Followers List. Here is where you will be able to do all your filtering and sorting through your Instagram followers.

One new feature we’ve added is the ability to see each follower’s top three Instagram posts. When you hover over each post, you will be able to see any captions that accompany the image, as well as how many likes and comments the post got. This should be an interesting way to get a quick look at what your followers are sharing on IG:

But what if you want to switch over and look at your Twitter followers? Simple. Just toggle over to Twitter via the switch located above the green Save List icon:

Introducing the SocialRank Index

The Twitter Activity of the World’s Biggest Brands

When we first launched SocialRank, it was out of a pretty whimsical desire to see who our best followers were on Twitter. But as we continued building out our product and saw the types of accounts flowing in to use it, we realized that we’d stumbled upon a much larger challenge.

Our conversations about the things we like have moved online. Brands recognize this and they spend billions of dollars trying to build a social media presence. Unfortunately, for far too many companies, “presence” means racking up followers  — without any regard to quality. This is largely a voodoo metric that undermines the efforts of brands to create meaningful experiences for their fans and potential customers.

They don’t really know what kind of mileage they are getting out of their investment in social media. How are they performing in relation to their competitors? Does it really matter that they have more followers than anyone else in their industry? Are they ultimately focusing on the wrong things?

Currently there’s no publicly available standard out there for them to figure that out. So we built it.

We’ve started with just Twitter, but we’ll be expanding to other platforms as well.

Meet the SocialRank Index

1The SocialRank Index reads a lot like a Bloomberg stock chart– except instead of tracking stock prices, we’re tracking industry-wide follower and engagement levels on Twitter.

So if a digital marketer at @SoulCycle visits the Global Brands Index, she may discover that the biggest global brands on average have more followers than SoulCycle. But then she’ll dig deeper into the specific data and realize that SoulCycle’s followers are on average much more engaged.

With the SocialRank Index, innovative brands can take the guesswork out of social media. Instead of being in the game of collecting more and more followers, they now have the data to focus on the brand’s heart and soul: the quality of followers and engagement.

Global Brands


Today we are releasing the first index– or as our inner dork calls it, our “genesis index.”

The flagship Index was inspired by Interbrand’s Best Global Brands of 2014. The companies that make up this Index are everyone from Nike and Starbucks to Coca Cola and Nintendo. These are the most iconic brands in the world, and so it will be interesting to see how their followers are engaging with them.

The Global Brands Index will be the default index when landing on the homepage of the SocialRank Index.



We’ve broken the metrics down into two broad categories: Followers and Engagement.

Within these categories, we track stats such as: total followers, verified followers, top locations, total engagement, mentions, @replies, retweets, and more. These are all refreshed on an hourly basis. To see a detailed breakdown of these metrics, please visit our FAQ here. Brand managers often fall into the trap of looking at just Total Followers to gauge success. The SocialRank Index helps them dig deeper into the vast world of Twitter data to uncover more meaningful metrics.


One notably powerful metric is Mentions from Followers vs. Everyone. How often are your followers mentioning you in a Tweet? How often are people who aren’t following you mentioning you in a Tweet? This breakdown opens up a whole new discussion for marketing teams.

The people mentioning you who aren’t following you might be potential customers that you just haven’t engaged with yet. Or maybe they are unsatisfied customers turning to Twitter to vent. Either way, this metric gives a brand a deeper look into who is talking about them on social media.

Note: All of the numbers tracked refer to the averages across the single index you’re viewing. For example, for “Total Followers” in the Global Brands Index, we just added up the number of followers that every brand in an index has, then calculated the average.

SocialRank Dashboard


Once you see the index, you might think, “That’s nice, but how do I see how my account is doing?”

Simple. Just log in to SocialRank with your Twitter account, and you will be dropped into the dashboard, where all your individual data will be displayed. You’ll be able to see all the metrics listed in the previous section, except specific to your own account.


In the dashboard, you will also be able to directly compare your numbers to the various indexes. Here is where a brand like @SoulCycle would be able to quickly see how it stacks up against the Global Brands Index. The idea here is to help brands understand what the industry average looks like and how they are performing across the metrics that matter to them.

Next Steps

Over the next few weeks and months, we will be rolling out more indexes ranging from sports, music, and retail to universities, nonprofits, and airlines. Our goal is to help change the game for customer-obsessed brands, looking at the right data so brands can make more informed decisions. Because this is a huge undertaking, we won’t be perfect right away, but we’ll be continuously improving on what you see today.

The social media world is often misunderstood. At SocialRank, we’re trying to clean up the mess and help brands more easily understand what’s really going on. At a micro-level, we want them to be able to know everything about their followers (what do they like, where do they live, how often do they engage with you, etc). With Market Intelligence, we want them to be able to know everything about their competitors’ followers. And finally, with the SocialRank Index and Dashboard, we want brands to be able to see at a high level how their social media activity stacks up against the rest of their industry.

With these three pieces tied together, we hope to get a stronger pulse of the social media world (starting with Twitter) and help brands better connect with their customers.
